About XPENG: The company behind the X9

XPENG is a Chinese automotive technology company founded in 2014 and headquartered in Guangzhou. The manufacturer specialises in intelligent battery-electric vehicles, integrating electric powertrains, connected software, digital systems and advanced driver-assistance technology.

Unlike conventional automotive manufacturers that initially developed petrol and diesel vehicles, XPENG was established with battery-electric mobility at the centre of its business strategy.

The company entered the UK passenger-car market in 2025 with the G6 electric SUV and subsequently expanded its planned model range. The X9 represents a move into the premium electric MPV segment, targeting motorists who require greater passenger accommodation than conventional five-seat SUVs.

XPENG places considerable emphasis on artificial intelligence, connected services, software updates and advanced vehicle electronics. These technologies form an important part of the X9’s design, particularly its intelligent cockpit, passenger-comfort functions and driver-assistance systems.

The X9 was originally introduced in China before expanding into additional international markets. XPENG announced its UK introduction on 8 July 2026, together with three variants, provisional delivery arrangements and starting on-the-road prices.

For UK consumers, the X9’s principal attractions are likely to be its seven-seat flexibility, substantial driving range, premium interior, rapid charging and distinctive exterior design. The availability of local servicing, warranty support and replacement parts will also be important for prospective owners.

Meet the XPENG X9

Overview

The XPENG X9 is a large, fully electric luxury MPV designed to accommodate seven occupants in a premium environment. According to official international manufacturer specifications, it measures approximately 5,316 mm in length, 1,988 mm in width excluding mirrors and 1,785 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm.

Its distinctive exterior incorporates a sloping front profile, full-width lighting elements, aerodynamic bodywork and a futuristic rear design. The manufacturer describes this as its Starship design language, intended to differentiate the X9 from more conventional people carriers.

The long wheelbase is particularly important because the X9 prioritises interior accommodation. Rather than using the conventional five-seat SUV arrangement, the vehicle provides two front seats, two individual second-row seats and a three-seat rear bench.

The second row is designed around passenger comfort, with extensive electric adjustment, reclining functions, heating, ventilation and massage features in the manufacturer’s international specification. The third row provides additional accommodation and can be adjusted or folded to increase luggage space.

The UK X9 range was announced with Standard Range, Long Range and AWD variants. The first two use front-wheel drive, while the AWD version adds a second electric motor for additional traction and stronger acceleration.

All three versions use XPENG’s 800V electrical architecture, allowing the vehicle to benefit from extremely high-power DC charging infrastructure when suitable equipment is available.

Independent driving assessments generally highlight the X9’s spacious interior, comfortable seating, low cabin noise and advanced charging system. However, its substantial dimensions, touchscreen-based controls and some aspects of motorway steering feel require consideration.

The X9 is therefore best understood as a luxury people carrier designed for comfortable family and executive travel, rather than a performance-focused vehicle.

Battery & range

The XPENG X9 is offered with two manufacturer-published gross battery capacities. Official international specifications identify a 94.8 kWh battery for the Standard Range and a 110 kWh battery for the Long Range and AWD versions.

The Standard Range uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, while the larger-battery versions use nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) chemistry in the reviewed international specification. These battery configurations should be confirmed against the final UK vehicle specification.

LFP batteries are valued for characteristics including thermal stability and reduced reliance on nickel and cobalt. NCM batteries can offer higher energy density, making them suitable for vehicles requiring substantial battery capacity and longer driving range.

Battery chemistry is only one factor affecting battery performance and longevity. Cell design, temperature control, charging patterns and the battery management system are also important.

According to XPENG’s UK launch announcement, the Standard Range has an official WLTP combined range of 332 miles, the Long Range provides 382 miles, and the AWD delivers 360 miles.

Battery and range Standard Range Long Range AWD
Gross battery capacity 94.8 kWh 110 kWh 110 kWh
Battery chemistry LFP NCM NCM
UK WLTP combined range 332 miles 382 miles 360 miles
Drivetrain Front-wheel drive Front-wheel drive All-wheel drive
Maximum motor power 235 kW 235 kW 370 kW

UK driving ranges and motor outputs are taken from XPENG’s July 2026 UK announcement. Gross battery capacities and chemistry are supported by official international specifications for the corresponding model configurations. Battery usable capacities and any UK-specific equipment variations should be confirmed before ordering.

The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) measures electric driving range under standardised conditions. It provides a useful basis for comparing different electric vehicles but does not guarantee the same range in everyday driving.

The actual distance available between charges depends on motorway speed, ambient temperature, heating and air-conditioning usage, terrain, vehicle load and driving style.

Vehicle load is particularly relevant to the X9 because it can accommodate seven people and substantial luggage. Carrying a full complement of passengers, or undertaking sustained motorway journeys, can increase electricity consumption compared with lighter-use driving.

An independent European summer driving assessment recorded a distance of approximately 646 km for a tested X9, exceeding the applicable official range figure under those particular conditions. The result demonstrates the vehicle’s potential efficiency but should not be interpreted as a guaranteed result for every UK version.

The Long Range is likely to be particularly attractive for motorists regularly undertaking longer journeys, as it offers the highest official range without the additional motor and energy requirements of the AWD configuration.

Prospective owners should nevertheless plan journeys using realistic energy consumption and a suitable charging reserve rather than relying exclusively on the maximum WLTP range.

Charging

Charging is one of the XPENG X9’s most significant technical strengths. All three UK variants use an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture designed to support exceptionally high DC charging power.

Official manufacturer specifications quote a maximum DC charging capability of 537 kW for the Standard Range and 542 kW for the Long Range and AWD versions.

Under suitable conditions, XPENG quotes a charging time of just 12 minutes from 10% to 80%. This is a manufacturer-stated result achieved using compatible high-power charging equipment and favourable battery conditions.

Charging specification Standard Range Long Range AWD
Maximum AC charging 11 kW 11 kW 11 kW
Maximum DC charging 537 kW 542 kW 542 kW
DC charging (10–80%) 12 minutes 12 minutes 12 minutes
AC connector Type 2 Type 2 Type 2
DC connector CCS2 CCS2 CCS2

Charging power is based on official international technical specifications consistent with the UK model announcement. The 12-minute 10–80% figure is quoted by XPENG for optimal charging conditions. Actual results depend on charger capability, battery temperature, state of charge and other operating factors.

The X9’s maximum DC charging capability is substantially higher than that of many established electric vehicles. However, its advertised charging speed should not be interpreted as the rate available at every public charging station.

The UK charging network includes many rapid and ultra-rapid chargers with lower power ratings than the X9’s maximum capability. When connected to such equipment, the vehicle’s charging rate will be limited by the power available from the charger and the battery’s operating conditions.

Independent European charging observations recorded a 10–80% charging session of approximately 12 minutes and 55 seconds for a tested X9. This provides useful evidence that the manufacturer’s rapid-charging technology can perform strongly under suitable real-world conditions, although it does not guarantee identical results for UK owners.

For home charging, the X9 supports up to 11 kW AC charging with suitable equipment. Most UK homes have single-phase electricity supplies, and dedicated home EV chargers commonly provide up to approximately 7.4 kW, subject to the electrical installation.

The vehicle’s 11 kW AC capability does not mean that every domestic charger can supply 11 kW. Achieving the higher rate generally requires an appropriate three-phase electrical installation.

Because the X9 has a relatively large battery, replenishing substantial amounts of energy through a conventional home charger can take considerably longer than using a suitable public DC rapid charger. However, owners do not normally need to recharge from empty after every journey.

Drivers with access to a dedicated home charger may benefit from scheduling charging during off-peak electricity periods, while those who regularly travel long distances should consider the availability of suitable DC charging facilities on their usual routes.

The international X9 specification also lists Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing the vehicle to supply electricity to compatible external equipment using an appropriate adaptor. The applicable UK equipment, output limit and operational restrictions should be confirmed with XPENG before use.

Practicality

Practicality is central to the XPENG X9’s appeal. Unlike most electric SUVs, the X9 is specifically designed around a seven-seat MPV configuration, providing individual second-row seating and a flexible three-seat rear bench.

The long 3,160 mm wheelbase helps maximise passenger accommodation. Electrically operated sliding rear doors provide convenient access to the second and third rows, particularly in locations where conventional wide-opening rear doors would be less practical.

The second row incorporates premium reclining seats, with electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage features described in the manufacturer’s model information. This makes the X9 particularly suitable for passengers who spend considerable time travelling in the rear compartment.

Depending on the version, the second-row seats can also offer extended leg support and a relaxed seating position. However, using their full recline may substantially reduce the space available to third-row occupants, so the vehicle’s flexibility is most useful when the seating arrangement is adjusted to the number of passengers.

The third-row seating can be adjusted and folded, allowing owners to increase luggage space when all seven seats are not required.

Official international specifications list approximately 721 litres of luggage capacity, increasing to as much as 2,514 litres in the expanded configuration. These measurements should be confirmed against the final UK specification and the manufacturer’s measurement conditions, especially when comparing usable luggage space with all seven seats occupied.

For families travelling with children, the ability to combine passenger seating with luggage accommodation is particularly important. Buyers should test the space available for prams, suitcases, child seats and other equipment before making a purchase decision.

The large sliding doors, generous cabin height and extensive passenger adjustments can also benefit older occupants and those who find conventional SUV access less convenient.

However, the vehicle’s overall dimensions are substantial. At approximately 5.3 metres long and almost two metres wide excluding mirrors, the X9 is considerably larger than many family cars. Buyers should check home-garage dimensions, local parking facilities and frequently used roads.

One useful manoeuvrability feature is the active rear-wheel steering system listed in official manufacturer specifications. By allowing the rear wheels to turn, the system can help reduce the space required for low-speed manoeuvres and improve stability in appropriate driving conditions.

The manufacturer also lists an intelligent dual-chamber air suspension system designed to support passenger comfort. The exact UK equipment configuration and operating features should be confirmed when ordering.

Technology & equipment

The XPENG X9 features a technology-rich interior designed around passenger comfort, entertainment and intelligent vehicle controls.

According to the manufacturer’s official international specification, the X9 incorporates a large central infotainment display, a digital driver instrument panel and a dedicated rear entertainment screen. These systems allow front and rear occupants to access entertainment, navigation and selected vehicle functions.

The manufacturer’s UK model page also highlights six-zone voice interaction, enabling occupants in different seating positions to control compatible vehicle functions through spoken commands.

Comfort equipment described for the X9 includes premium upholstery, electrically adjustable seating, multiple massage functions, advanced climate control, ambient lighting, premium audio and electrically operated doors.

The reviewed international specification lists a 27-speaker premium audio system, multiple wireless smartphone charging pads and a powered interior refrigeration compartment. However, UK buyers should confirm the inclusion of these features in the specific vehicle being supplied, as equipment can vary by country and variant.

The climate-control system is designed to serve the different seating rows, with extensive air distribution and separate passenger controls. This is particularly useful for larger families, where occupants may have different temperature preferences.

The X9 supports XPENG’s connected vehicle software and over-the-air updates, allowing compatible features to receive improvements without every software change requiring a workshop visit.

The manufacturer’s driver-assistance and parking systems can include adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, surround-view cameras, automated parking functions and other supported features. Availability and operation may depend on the UK configuration and installed software.

Although the digital technology is extensive, a touchscreen-heavy approach may be less appealing to buyers who prefer physical controls. An independent 2026 safety assessment also identified weaknesses in the vehicle’s speed-limit recognition system and its reliance on screen-based controls for some driving functions.

Prospective owners should therefore assess the infotainment system, driving controls and operation of the assistance features during a demonstration or test drive rather than assuming that extensive technology automatically improves usability.

Performance

Despite its substantial dimensions and seven-seat layout, the XPENG X9 offers strong electric performance. The UK range includes two front-wheel-drive versions and a more powerful all-wheel-drive model.

The Standard Range and Long Range use a single front electric motor producing 235 kW and 450 Nm of torque, according to XPENG’s July 2026 UK announcement.

The Standard Range accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in a manufacturer-quoted 8.2 seconds, while the Long Range completes the same acceleration in 7.75 seconds.

The AWD version adds a second electric motor driving the rear wheels, producing a combined 370 kW and 640 Nm. This reduces the quoted acceleration time from 0 to 62 mph to just 5.9 seconds.

All three UK versions have a published top speed of 124 mph. However, maximum speed is considerably less important in ordinary UK driving than passenger comfort, stability and the vehicle’s response at typical motorway speeds.

The X9 uses a single-speed electric transmission, allowing smooth power delivery without conventional gear changes. Electric motor torque is available from low speeds, supporting responsive acceleration despite the vehicle’s considerable size.

Independent driving assessments generally describe the X9 as quiet and comfortable, particularly on smoother roads. Its advanced suspension and rear-wheel steering also help make the large MPV more manageable than its exterior dimensions might suggest.

However, some assessments have noted that sharp road imperfections can still be felt in the cabin and that motorway steering feedback is relatively light. The X9 is designed primarily for comfortable passenger transport rather than enthusiastic cornering.

For most buyers, either front-wheel-drive version is likely to offer sufficient performance. The AWD variant will be more relevant to motorists who value additional traction and acceleration, although its shorter official range should be considered.

Safety

The XPENG X9 received a five-star rating in an independent European vehicle-safety assessment published on 12 October 2026. The assessment evaluated the vehicle using four principal categories covering safe driving, crash avoidance, crash protection and post-crash safety.

2026 independent safety assessment Score
Safe Driving 57%
Crash Avoidance 82%
Crash Protection 91%
Post-Crash Safety 91%
Overall rating 5 stars

The tested vehicle was a front-wheel-drive Long Range configuration. The published assessment also lists coverage for the relevant Standard Range and AWD versions, including right-hand-drive configurations.

The X9 performed particularly well in crash protection and post-crash safety, with the assessment recording effective protection for occupants in several impact scenarios.

The safety equipment includes a range of airbags, electronic stability systems, automatic emergency braking and driver-assistance technology. XPENG’s UK model page lists nine airbags as standard.

The vehicle also incorporates child-presence detection, driver monitoring, collision-avoidance systems and features intended to assist occupants and emergency responders following an accident.

However, the five-star overall rating should not obscure the weaker Safe Driving score of 57%. The independent assessment identified deficiencies in speed-limit recognition, including the interpretation of certain conditional speed restrictions.

Some driving functions were also criticised for relying too heavily on touchscreen controls. These findings demonstrate why buyers should evaluate specific safety and assistance features rather than relying only on the overall star rating.

XPENG’s driver-assistance systems are intended to support the driver in appropriate situations. They do not make the X9 a fully autonomous vehicle, and the driver remains responsible for vehicle control and compliance with road rules.

As with all vehicles using advanced assistance technology, buyers should familiarise themselves with the system’s capabilities and limitations before relying on it in everyday driving.

The verdict

The XPENG X9 is an ambitious entry into the premium electric MPV segment, combining extensive passenger accommodation, advanced technology and exceptionally rapid charging capability.

Its greatest strengths are the seven-seat interior, luxurious second-row accommodation, flexible passenger arrangements and 800V charging architecture. The ability to recharge from 10% to 80% in a manufacturer-quoted 12 minutes under optimal conditions is particularly attractive for a large electric vehicle.

The official UK driving range of up to 382 miles is another important advantage, especially for motorists regularly undertaking longer journeys with multiple passengers.

The X9’s five-star independent safety rating and strong crash-protection scores add to its appeal, although the weaker performance of certain driver-assistance and speed-recognition functions should not be overlooked.

There are also practical compromises. Its substantial exterior dimensions may be challenging in some UK parking environments, while the high purchase price places it beyond the budgets of many families. Access to very high-power charging infrastructure will also influence how frequently owners can benefit from its maximum charging capability.

The Standard Range offers the most accessible entry price and a useful 332-mile WLTP range. The Long Range adds a larger battery and increases the official range to 382 miles, while retaining the same basic front-wheel-drive configuration.

The AWD provides stronger acceleration and additional traction, but its shorter 360-mile range and higher advertised price make it a more specialised choice.

The e-zoomed view: The XPENG X9 deserves serious consideration from UK motorists seeking a premium seven-seat electric people carrier. For most buyers, the Long Range appears to offer the best balance of driving range, passenger comfort and charging capability. The Standard Range provides a lower-cost alternative, while the AWD is most suitable for those who specifically value stronger performance and all-wheel drive.

Before purchasing, buyers should confirm UK vehicle availability, equipment, warranty conditions and the final on-the-road quotation. A comprehensive test drive should also include the second and third seating rows, parking manoeuvres and an assessment of the digital vehicle controls.

These are the manufacturer’s announced UK starting on-the-road prices from July 2026, not guaranteed November 2026 transaction quotations. Retailer prices may differ, and final costs will depend on specification, options, availability and any applicable offers. Obtain a written quotation and confirmed delivery arrangement from an authorised XPENG UK retailer before committing to a purchase.

The Standard Range provides the lowest advertised purchase price, together with a 332-mile WLTP range and the same fundamental seven-seat MPV layout as the more expensive versions.

The Long Range costs £5,000 more according to the announced UK prices, increasing the official driving range to 382 miles. For motorists regularly undertaking longer journeys, the additional battery capacity may be particularly valuable.

The AWD costs a further £5,000 and adds the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, increasing motor power to 370 kW and reducing the quoted 0–62 mph acceleration time to 5.9 seconds.

XPENG’s UK announcement identifies Arctic White as the standard exterior colour, with optional alternative finishes. Interior colour options and additional features may also affect the final price.

Given the X9’s relatively high purchase price, buyers should consider the full cost of ownership rather than focusing exclusively on the advertised starting price.

Relevant costs include insurance, depreciation, Vehicle Excise Duty, finance charges, electricity, servicing, tyres and any optional equipment. UK tax treatment may also depend on the final list price and the regulations applicable when the vehicle is registered.

The X9 may also appeal to businesses providing executive or premium passenger transportation. However, commercial use introduces additional considerations, including appropriate licensing, insurance, tax treatment, charging infrastructure and vehicle availability.

For eligible employees, an electric-car salary-sacrifice or company-car arrangement may be worth considering, subject to the applicable tax rules, employer scheme and individual circumstances.

Any finance or leasing quotation should be assessed using the deposit, monthly payments, agreement duration, interest rate, mileage restrictions and any optional final payment, rather than relying solely on the headline monthly figure.
